Dead zones and poor placement

A router inside a cabinet or at one edge of the house cannot provide balanced coverage. Concrete, metal, mirrors and impact glass alter signal paths. Map signal and application performance in actual work, media and outdoor areas before moving equipment or buying extenders.

Interference and channel contention

Neighboring networks and your own access points can share airtime. More radios at maximum power can make performance worse. Inspect channel use on 2.4 and 5 GHz, choose widths appropriate to the environment, and tune power so adjacent cells overlap enough for service without dominating one another.

Mesh backhaul bottlenecks

A mesh node needs a strong link to its upstream node. Placing it inside the dead zone repeats a weak connection, and a wireless backhaul consumes airtime. Use Ethernet backhaul when possible; otherwise position nodes where both the upstream link and client coverage are healthy.

Roaming and client behavior

The phone or laptop usually decides when to leave one access point for another. Different client radios and drivers roam differently, so one device may fail while another works. Consistent SSIDs, appropriate power and modern client software help, but testing must include the actual critical devices.

Separate internet from local-network faults

Test a wired device at the gateway, then a wired LAN client, then Wi-Fi near and far from access points. This sequence distinguishes ISP issues from switching, DNS and RF problems. Save controller logs and measurements before rebooting everything; evidence makes the fix repeatable.
